Getting of Fear of Public Speaking
One question I’ve asked myself for years has helped me move from being timid and hesitant to having (almost) no fear of getting up in front of people, no fear of writing and putting my work out there; no fear of networking and no fear in picking up the phone and calling people: “What’s the worst that could happen?” If I honestly answer that question – what’s the worst that could happen? – and realize that if I DO get up in front of people and stumble over a few words and hey, maybe even look like an amateur, well, I’ll still wake up tomorrow morning. I’ll still have my mind, my brain, my friends, my job… I mean, making a few mistakes in a public speech is not like getting arrested and having your face on the front page of the local metro section or in the TV news. If the worst that can happen is something you can live through and come out on the other side, then what have you REALLY got to fear? Nothing. Because unless the worst that can happen is you wake up dead, you’ll be okay. You’ll live through the experience. You’ll be fine. F.I.N.E. Now, turn that question around: what’s the BEST that can happen? Hmm…here’s where it gets interesting. What IS the BEST that can happen? Let’s say you’re giving a luncheon speech at a local networking meeting. Maybe the best that can happen is that someone will come up and say “great speech! Thanks!” Is that the BEST that can happen? Of course not. You can think of something better. Maybe a guy will love your speech and offer you a job. Or offer to buy one of your products or hire your services. Or maybe he’ll ask you to speak to their group about the same thing – only pay you a lot of money. I mean, there’s NO LIMIT to the BEST that can happen! Are you following me here? Are you getting this? The sky is the limit – you never know what good will come out of getting up in front of people and speaking. You never know what great things will come about because you picked up the phone. Or because you went to a network get-together with enthusiasm. Or how many people will see your writing, whether in a trade magazine, a website, or in a published book. So next time you are hesitant about putting your ‘stuff’ out there, ask yourself those two questions: What’s the WORST that can happen? and… What’s the BEST that can happen?

Contributor's Note
This is a slightly edited version of a post from my blog. I think when you start speaking in public (or any creative endeavor where you put yourself out in front of the public), any little edge you can give yourself is important.
